Economic Security Takes Front Seat at Rubio’s Confirmation Hearing
1.15.25
Demonstrating an impressive command of foreign policy issues at his confirmation hearing today, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State Marco Rubio offered a welcome approach for U.S. competitiveness and economic security:
* Rubio said that one of the three baseline questions that will guide the incoming Administration’s foreign policy, in addition to safety and security is: “Does it make America more prosperous?”
* He underscored that the United States has a “critical” role in setting technical standards at multilateral institutions in a discussion that touched upon advanced technologies, using 5G and additive manufacturing as just a couple of examples.
* In Latin America, Rubio acknowledged the need to up our engagement with countries and lamented China’s economic inroads there. In a related discussion on the Panama Canal, citing bipartisan sources and U.S. military leaders, he warned that state-owned Chinese companies with dual-use capabilities are positioned to create a chokepoint on the strategic waterway.
